This Program is built upon the discipline of Materials Science and Engineering, a national key discipline that focuses on the fundamental research in material science and the development of material engineering technologies. It covers diverse fields including synthesis and preparation of polymer materials, structure and properties of polymer materials, special and functional elastomers, high-performance carbon fibers and composites, nanocomposites, metal corrosion and protection, polymer coatings and binders, biomedical materials, functional carbon materials, and advanced energy materials. The research conducted not only holds significant international academic influence but also enjoys a high reputation within the industrial sector. The faculty team comprises over 230 professional teachers, including 200 holding senior titles. The faculty includes one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and two dual-employed academicians. The Materials Science ranks among the Top 1‰ worldwide in ESI subject rankings.

This Program aims to cultivate high-level talents with good professional ethics who have a solid theoretical foundation and broad expertise in the field of Materials Science and Engineering, possess strong capabilities of solving practical problems and computer application, demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language, and can undertake professional technology or management work. The Advanced Innovation Center for Soft Matter Science and Engineering focuses on soft matter systems as its research subject. By applying multidisciplinary integration spanning chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, biology, and environment, it addresses critical scientific and technological challenges in energy, environment, and life science fields. The Program adopts an integrated science-engineering approach for talent cultivation, offering five primary academic tracks: Chemical Engineering and Technology, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Bioengineering.
The discipline of Materials Science and Engineering achieved significant milestones in its development: it obtained the authority to award Master's degree in 1982 and Ph.D degree in 1986, was designated as a national key discipline by the State Education Commission (then named Polymer Materials) in the same year, established a postdoctoral research station in 1990, gained the authority to award Ph.D degree in its primary discipline in 2000, was recognized as a key primary discipline of Beijing Municipality in 2008, with its Materials Science sub-discipline as a national key discipline.

This Program cultivates well-rounded professional technicians. Academic master's degree holders should possess a solid theoretical foundation and systematic expertise, have expertise in modern experimental synthesis methods and characterization techniques relevant to the Program, strengthen and permeate with materials, environment, light industry, petrochemical, life science, chemical engineering and other disciplines and have the basic theory and a wide range of knowledge of multi-disciplines, possess proficiency in reading specialized literature, good writing skills and the capability of international academic exchanges. Meanwhile, he/she should have the preliminary computer ability and be able to use the computer and the network technology skillfully to carry on literature collection and exchange; have rigorous and pragmatic scientific attitude, good experimental skills and the ability to summarize and analyze scientific problems, be competent for teaching, scientific research and technical management in colleges and universities, scientific research institutes, enterprises and other units.

It has established the National Carbon Fiber Engineering Technology Research Center and the National Engineering Research Center for Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy Technologies.

The Advanced Innovation Center for Soft Matter Science and Engineering focuses on soft matter systems as its research subject. By applying multidisciplinary integration spanning chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, biology, and environment, it addresses critical scientific and technological challenges in energy, environment, and life science fields. The Center adopts an integrated science-engineering approach for talent cultivation. It maintains a research team of 19 full-time and 13 part-time researchers, including seven members of the US National Academy of Engineering and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. It occupies dedicated research and office space, and the completed Advanced Innovation Complex will provide an additional 20,000 square meters of internationally standardized research and office space. The Center is equipped with five advanced research platforms to meet R&D needs: Intelligent Synthetic Biology Platform, Aerosol and Haze Research Platform, Energy Materials and Devices Platform, High-Performance Computing Platform, and Nano-biomedical Materials Platform.
The Materials Science and Engineering discipline was granted the authority to award Ph.D degree in 1986, and award Ph.D degree in the primary discipline in 2000, with the Materials Science discipline designated as a national key discipline. In May 2022, the Materials Science discipline ranked among the Top 1‰ globally in ESI subject rankings, achieving the 80th position worldwide.
