The Advanced Innovation Center for Soft Matter Science and Engineering focuses on soft matter systems as its research subject. By applying multidisciplinary integration spanning chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, biology, and environment, it addresses critical scientific and technological challenges in energy, environment, and life science fields. The Program adopts an integrated science-engineering approach for talent cultivation, offering five primary academic tracks: Chemical Engineering and Technology, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Bioengineering.
The discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering was granted the authority to award Master's degree in Environmental Engineering in 1998, Master's degree in Environmental Science in 2003, and Ph.D degree in the sub-discipline of Environmental Engineering and Master's degree in the primary discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering in 2006. The Environmental Engineering discipline was accredited as a Beijing key discipline in 2010; in 2012, it was granted the authority to award Ph.D degree in the primary discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering; in 2014, it established a postdoctoral research station in Environmental Science and Engineering. In May 2022, the Ecology/Environmental Science ranked among the Top 1% globally in ESI subject rankings.

This Program cultivates well-rounded professional technicians. Academic master's degree holders should possess a solid theoretical foundation and systematic expertise, have expertise in modern experimental synthesis methods and characterization techniques relevant to the Program, strengthen and permeate with materials, environment, light industry, petrochemical, life science, chemical engineering and other disciplines and have the basic theory and a wide range of knowledge of multi-disciplines, possess proficiency in reading specialized literature, good writing skills and the capability of international academic exchanges. Meanwhile, he/she should have the preliminary computer ability and be able to use the computer and the network technology skillfully to carry on literature collection and exchange; have rigorous and pragmatic scientific attitude, good experimental skills and the ability to summarize and analyze scientific problems, be competent for teaching, scientific research and technical management in colleges and universities, scientific research institutes, enterprises and other units.

This Program is built upon the discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering, encompassing two sub-disciplines: Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering. In 2010, the Environmental Engineering discipline was recognized as a Beijing Key Discipline, and its undergraduate program was designated as a Beijing Distinguished Specialty Program. In 2012, the Program was granted the authority to award Ph.D degree in the primary discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering, and was approved to establish a postdoctoral research station in Environmental Science and Engineering in 2014. The faculty team currently has 40 members engaged in teaching and research, including 19 professors and 15 doctoral supervisors.
Through the key development of the university's 211 Project and 985 Project Innovation Platforms, the Environmental Science and Engineering discipline has established substantial scale and good educational infrastructure. A Specialized Environmental Engineering Laboratory has been constructed on campus, providing good experimental and research conditions for multiple areas including water pollution control, solid waste treatment and recycling, air pollution control, as well as environmental monitoring and assessment. The Program maintains an average annual research funding of RMB 20 million. Over the past five years, more than 200 high-quality research papers indexed by SCI (including publications in the top-tier journal Science) have been published internationally. In 2021, the Environment and Ecology discipline achieved its first entry into the Top 1% of ESI global rankings.

The Advanced Innovation Center for Soft Matter Science and Engineering focuses on soft matter systems as its research subject. By applying multidisciplinary integration spanning chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, biology, and environment, it addresses critical scientific and technological challenges in energy, environment, and life science fields. The Center adopts an integrated science-engineering approach for talent cultivation. It maintains a research team of 19 full-time and 13 part-time researchers, including seven members of the US National Academy of Engineering and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. It occupies dedicated research and office space, and the completed Advanced Innovation Complex will provide an additional 20,000 square meters of internationally standardized research and office space. The Center is equipped with five advanced research platforms to meet R&D needs: Intelligent Synthetic Biology Platform, Aerosol and Haze Research Platform, Energy Materials and Devices Platform, High-Performance Computing Platform, and Nano-biomedical Materials Platform.
The Environmental Science and Engineering discipline was granted the authority to award Ph.D degree in the primary discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering in 2012. In May 2022, the Ecology/Environmental Science discipline ranked among the Top 1% globally in ESI subject rankings, achieving the 907th position worldwide.
